Chianti Classico

Really fancied something a bit different tonight. I have had a nice Chianti Classico in the cellar for a while. I have had my eye on it for the last few week, so tonight I decided to open it. It was a great wine; perfect for a Friday night after a week full of too many late nights and early mornings.

Carpineto, Chianti Classico Riserva (DOCG), 2000, Italy.

This is a great wine. It is not an in your face wine. It's delicate and restrained but focused too. The nose has some soft cherry and red fruit aromas. After some time in the glass the wine develops darker fruits, menthol, liquorice and some medicinal aromas. There is a sort of woody spice to this wine. There are darker fruits on the palate. There is plenty of tannic structure here which helps make this wine very food friendly. There is a bit of oak on the palate too. This is a lovely complex wine. I can't get over how restrained this wine is. It's so well balanced with a really nice delicate length. Such a good wine. 4.5/5 (13% abv)

  1. I've been getting into Chianti Classico as well recently. Where did you get this? Price?

  2. Hey Tim,
I have had this for a while so details may be a bit blurred! I think I got it from Majestic Wine for about £11 but that was roughly 4 years ago. The last time I saw it I think it was about £15. I don't know if Majestic still stock this wine anymore. Sites like winefinder or everywine may be able to help. Let me know what other Chiantis you have gotten on well with and what you thought.

  3. Hey Simon,

This one was particularly good: http://timswineblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/piccini-poggio-teo-chianti-classico.html

Although I think they've run out - for £9 it was a steal - I tried to buy 12 more but they screwed up my order and by the time I tried to re-order it it was all gone.

This was the last one I tried (from the Wine Society) - http://timswineblog.blogspot.com/2009/11/villa-calcinaia-chianti-classico-2006.html

I'm on the lookout for more to try as well...

    Tim
